AFL stars ready to tackle Movember

By

Jack Riewoldt, Shaun Hampson, Sam Gilbert, Phil Davis, Josh Gibson, Tom Rockliff, Brett Deledio and Tony Armstrong are among the AFL stars set to launch into Movember on Sunday, with the popular campaign again set to raise funds and awareness for men’s health throughout November.

Richmond spearhead and Movember ambassador, Jack Riewoldt says the campaign has proven a hit with players in recent years, with some of the game’s biggest names happy to support a worthy cause.

“We actually had some guys last year who did the Movember campaign and haven’t got rid of [their moustaches] yet – David Astbury and Reece Conca like their mo’s,” Riewoldt told aflplayers.com.au at a recent Movember photo-shoot.

With a number of Tigers still sporting last year’s facial hair, Riewoldt joked that the next generation of Richmond Mo Bros might not look quite as dapper.

“To be honest, I think it might be down to me and a couple of the younger guys.

“Connor Menadue, Corey Ellis… They’re 18-year-old kids and we don’t know if they’ve gone through puberty fully, yet! Their mo’s might be on par with mine if I’m lucky.”

While the banter and fun is a key component of Movember, all players involved are well aware of the serious side of the campaign. Movember ambassador and Richmond big man Shaun Hampson understands the importance of raising funds and awareness for men’s health better than most.

“I had my dad pass away last year from prostate cancer,” Hampson told aflplayers.com.au.

“Men’s health – especially for men of my dad’s generation – it’s so important and something that’s not spoken about enough. I’m really passionate about it and happy to help out.”

In Australia, more men die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer. That’s just one of many facts the team at Movember will be trying to shine a light on over the next month.
