The nominees for the 2018 AFLW Players’ Most Valuable Player Awards have been revealed and there are some notable absentees and additions.

Collingwood first-year player, Chloe Molloy, and GWS first-year player, Courtney Gum, are welcome additions for the MVP Award having dominated since making their AFLW debuts in Round 1. Both players will also feature as Best First-Year Player nominees, while Gum joins Chelsea Randall as the only players eligible for three awards on the night, with Randall nominated for the MVP, Best Captain and Most Courageous awards.

Notable absentees include last year’s AFLW Players’ MVP Award winner Erin Phillips, who had a difficult season due to injury, and Carlton forward Tayla Harris.

Fremantle and Melbourne have nominated the same three players as last year for the main award, while the Lions, Magpies and Giants have put forward three different nominees from 2017.

Voting for the AFLW MVP, Most Courageous, Best First-Year Player and Best Captain awards is a two-stage process, with players nominating their teammates in stage one before selecting from a competition-wide field in stage two.

Players cannot vote for a player from their own club during stage two of the voting process.

Players will be recognised at a bespoke event on the first Monday the 26th of March and then again alongside their male colleagues at the AFL Players’ Association’s MVP Awards in September.

Presented on Monday will be the AFLW Players’ MVP Award, presented by Gloria Jean’s, the Best Captain Award, presented by KPMG, the Most Courageous Award, presented by Vifor Pharma, and the Best First-Year Player Award, presented by The Line.
