For AFLW stars, Mel Hickey and Kaitlyn Ashmore, a game in the country is a chance to show their true colours.

Participating in their own VFL Women’s Pride and Inclusion game in Hamilton — located 300km west of Melbourne — Hickey and Ashmore will wear a different version of their Darebin and Melbourne Uni jumpers this weekend.

The jumpers will feature rainbow colours to encourage inclusion and equality within community sport, with Hickey explaining the importance of wearing the ‘Gay That’s OK’ rainbow jumpers.

“If we can create an environment where no matter what sport you play, where you live or who you choose to be with that you feel included and part of community, and sport’s a great way of doing that,” Hickey told Aflplayers.com.au.

“The hope is that, particularly in country towns, people feel more included and that they can be themselves.”

Two local men’s teams, the Hamilton Kangaroos and South Warrnambool, will also play in specifically designed rainbow jumpers following the VFL Women’s match.

The Darebin and Melbourne University clash will be the second game between the two powerhouse sides since last year’s Grand Final, with reigning premiers Darebin going down to Melbourne Uni in Round 1.

The Hamilton Pride and Inclusion Day will be held on Saturday June 17th at Hamilton Melville Oval, with the VFL Women’s game starting at 3pm, with the men’s game kicking off at 5:15pm.

There will also be a luncheon at Alexandra House from 12:30pm, featuring three guest speakers including three-time premiership player Russell Greene.
