Indigenous All Stars captain Shaun Burgoyne admits it was “disappointing to lose” tonight’s match against West Coast, but says the game still “tops off a great week” spent at the AFL Players’ Indigenous Camp.

The Eagles kicked three goals to none in the second half to finish eight points clear of the All Stars. Burgoyne was awarded the Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer Medal for best on ground in front of approximately 10,000 spectators at Leederville Oval.

“We’ve spent the week with blokes from all over Australia”, Burgoyne said after the match.

The classy Hawthorn defender refused to single out a player he most enjoyed taking the field with, but praised the group’s approach to the game, as well as the camp more generally.

“Their attitudes this week have been outstanding. They all just want to learn,” the 32-year-old said.

“They ask questions because they want to have long AFL careers. We’re hoping they use what they’ve learned this week and take it back to their clubs to become better players as well as better people.”

Burgoyne admits he’s taken plenty away from the week himself, and will depart with many fond memories.

“When we got to the camp on Sunday a lot of boys were a bit quiet and unsure of how to go about things, but if you give them a couple of hours they lighten up, open up and start talking. Everyone’s a part-time comedian here as well, so the week’s just been full of laughs.”
