What you see isn’t always what you get when it comes to athletes but it’s not far off for Tom Mitchell.

One of the competition’s in-form players, it’s well-established that Mitchell is a tough competitor and he has suitably partnered with Australian Almonds as a Hard Nut ambassador.

Off the field, he keeps things simple and is easy going to the point where it’s almost refreshing.

While fans and pundits around the league debate his ball-winning abilities and impact on the field, the 24-year-old knows his limitations means putting in extra effort to other areas of the game.

“I know I’m not the most gifted physically with strength, speed or fitness but I try and put in 100 per cent effort and see where that takes me,” Mitchell told AFLPlayers.com.au.

“I think every aspect of my life I get pretty competitive. It’s probably what helps me on the footy field. That’s my natural nature.

“I’m just someone who tries to get the best out of myself each week and compete as hard as I can.”

That might’ve sounded like a cliche but there’s an humble honesty about the Peter Crimmins Medallist.

And apparently that unassuming personality extends to the kitchen, according to high-profile teammate and housemate, Jaeger O’Meara.

“Tom’s a little bit hopeless with the cooking,” O’Meara said.

“One morning, I was cooking fried eggs on the fry pan and Tom walked in and goes, ‘how do you cook those?'”

The pair have been living together since December but their relationship extends further than their time at the Hawks.

And just like the duo’s innate ability to understand each other at centre bounces for the brown and gold, O’Meara is a key ingredient to getting to know the real Tom Mitchell.
