Cyril back to take down The Unbeatables

Children and sport literature enthusiasts alike enjoyed the first instalment, and their early Christmas present is here with the release of the Fox Swift sequel.

Comedic author David Lawrence has partnered up once more with Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli as his 11-year old Aussie Rules gun Fox Swift returns to the shelves in Fox Swift takes on The Unbeatables.

“They are just fun drills and things that I grew up doing with my friends” – Cyril Rioli

The Unbeatables will no doubt face a tough task from Fox, who is leading his Davinal Diggers charge to a premiership under the mentoring of Hawks champion Rioli. But Mace Winter and his dad Miles will no doubt un-hatch some nasty plans to try and halt the Diggers’ on their path to glory.

Following the release of the first book – where Rioli provided ‘footy speak’ for to complement Lawrence’s humour – it was revealed the training skills and drills incorporated in the novel were some from Rioli’s own childhood, including the dribble-kick, which has since become a trademark of his game at the top-level.

“They are just fun drills and things that I grew up doing with my friends,” Rioli says.

“I learnt them all off my dad, who is my idol.”

Despite being an Essendon fan, Lawrence couldn’t resist wanting Rioli on board.

“It doesn’t matter who you barrack for, if you love AFL football, you love watching Cyril play. He is spectacular, but also fair,” says Lawrence.

“He is a modest champion – a great example to kids that you can be incredibly talented without being arrogant.”
