What is it like to train like an AFLW player?

As part of the AFL Players’ Association’s partnership with Australian AlmondsFit Foodie and North Melbourne captain Emma Kearney put Herald Sun journalist Sam Landsberger through his paces in an AFLW-inspired training session, which included a circuit comprised of sandbag squats, bear crawls, push ups, battle ropes, shuttle runs and medicine ball lunges.

2018 AFLW best and fairest winner Kearney is as fit as they come, and is a well-rounded athlete, having formerly played WBBL with the Melbourne Stars.

For her training partner, however, the grueling circuit and the oppressive heat proved to be incredibly challenging.

“I haven’t done anything like this in my entire life,” Landsberger told AFLPlayers.com.au.

“I climbed Machu Picchu in 2018 and haven’t seen a gym since and actually hadn’t seen one before then for about 10 years.”

Despite Landsberger describing the session as the hardest thing he’s done in his life, Kearney was sympathetic to the journalist’s ability.

“His technique needs a bit of work but if he was to get me to write a piece in the Herald Sun I’d be probably pretty average,” Kearney told AFLPlayers.com.au.

This year marks the third-year of the AFL Players’ Association’s partnership with Australian Almonds, showcasing fit foodies of the AFL and AFLW and the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.
