Join a Demon in raising a cup

Melbourne forward Jack Watts dropped in for a cuppa and a scone in the name of a good cause – now he wants you to do the same.

Watts paid a visit to avid Demons fan Phil Herbert during the week to help promote the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday May 26.

The pair first met several years ago when Watts volunteered to speak at a cancer fundraising dinner organised by the Herbert family, as Philip’s wife Mandy has been living with ovarian cancer for more than a decade.

“Philbie’s invited me down for a cup of tea and we’re going to be talking about the Biggest Morning Tea, to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research,” Watts said.

Herbert showed Watts his extensive collection on Demons memorabilia, which included signed guernseys and an old autograph book that featured signatures from club legends such as Norm Smith, Hassa Mann and Robert “Tassie” Johnson.

They also discussed the simple healthy lifestyle changes men could make to reduce their cancer risk and prevent a third of all cancers.

“Us males, we’re a bit stubborn sometimes with that sort of stuff, aren’t we?” Watts said to Herbert, adding that his parents had drilled home Sun Smart messages to the kids from an early age. He also spoke of recently losing both his paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother to cancer.

The idea of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is for friends, workplaces or schools to organise a gathering for a cuppa and some delicious food, to have a chat and collect some donations to help raise funds for the Cancer Council. The morning tea can be held any time in May or June.
