AFL Players’ General Manager of Player Relations, Ian Prendergast says the AFL’s decision to scrap the substitute rule and return to a four-man has been welcome by the players.

“Whilst we would have preferred for rotations to remain between 100 – 120, the impact will be limited by clubs having an additional player on the bench to rotate,” Prendergast said.

“So, overall, we are comfortable with the changes that have been made.

“We thank the AFL for taking an open and transparent approach to these issues and thank all players for their contribution, particularly the newly formed Players and the Game Committee.”

The Players and the Game Committee was created earlier this season as a way to provide players with a stronger voice on the future direction of the game, with superstars such as Scott Pendlebury, Sam Mitchell, Chris Judd and Dan Hannebery among those involved.

The abolition of the sub rule has also been welcomed by players such as Patrick Dangerfield, Steven Motlop and Mitch Robinson on social media.
