Players’ MVP of the Month nominees — June

Dustin Martin has been nominated for the AFL Players’ Association’s Most Valuable Player of the Month award for the third time this year. Martin is one of six nominees for the month of June, but the only player to be selected in all three voting periods.

Martin is joined by Patrick Dangerfield, who along with the Richmond spearhead, has enjoyed a stellar June, averaging 35 disposals per game.

Brisbane’s Dayne Zorko has been nominated for the first time after shining in three of the Lions’ four games last month, two of which were victories for the club.

Surprisingly, a total of six midfielders have been nominated, With Essendon’s Zach Merrett, Giant Dylan Shiel and Sydney’s Josh Kennedy rounding out the group.

Previous winners Rory Sloane (March/April) and Josh Kelly (May) failed to receive a nomination.

This is the third installment of the AFLPA’s MVP of the Month, which was created to recognise the individual performances of the game’s most valuable throughout the season.

Each month, players will vote to decide their MVP of the Month, with every winner automatically nominated for the end-of-season AFL Players’ MVP Award (Leigh Matthews Trophy).

AFL Players’ MVP winners Leigh Matthews (1982), Gerard Healy (1988), Tim Watson (1989) and Chris Judd (2006, 2011) are responsible for compiling a list of nominees before the current male players vote to decide the monthly winner.
