Which players are most respected by their peers?

We asked the players to share their opinions via a survey for AFL.com.au’s Players’ Top 50

Hawthorn skipper Luke Hodge has been voted into the top eight of the Players’ Top 50, following an outstanding 2014.

The 30-year-old led the Hawks to back-to-back premierships, setting the stage alight during last year’s Grand Final by collecting 35 disposals, booting two goals and becoming only the third player in history to win two Norm Smith Medals.

Few players are as widely respected by their peers as Hodge, who was named the AFL Players’ Association’s Best Captain in 2014 and was voted the game’s Most Courageous player in 2010.

He averaged 25 disposals per match and kicked 12 goals throughout 2014, but it’s his toughness, leadership and versatility that sets him apart from his competitors.

Ahead of last year’s Grand Final, Hawthorn teammate Brad Sewell told AFLPlayers.com.au Hodge’s influence extends well beyond what he does with the ball.

“It’s a great luxury to play alongside someone as versatile as Hodgey, who can play as a forward, defender or midfielder,” Sewell wrote.

“But better than that, he’s omnipresent on the field – no matter which section of the ground he’s playing in. If he’s in the backline, I’ll still notice him having an effect on me and the rest of our midfielders.

“He has fantastic vision, an ability to see what’s about to unfold before anyone else does and always directs players to a position where they can either get the ball or prevent the opposition from getting it.”
