Young Sun shines bright

A four-goal haul from rising Gold Coast Suns star Kalinda Howarth headlines the nominations for Round 6’s AFLW MVP of the Week.

North Melbourne’s Jasmine Garner and the GWS Giants’ Alyce Parker join Howarth as the other nominees for this week.

Despite not taking their chances inside 50 in the first half, a four-goal haul from Howarth, 20, proved the difference against fellow competition newcomers the West Coast Eagles. Two important back-to-back goals from the Suns’ sharpshooter in the third quarter gave the visiting side the edge to claim their second victory of the season. Howarth, the round three nomination for the AFLW Rising Star award, finished the game with eight kicks, three tackles and two inside 50s to go with her four goals.

Nominated for the second time this season, Garner was instrumental in North Melbourne’s big win over Geelong, collecting 18 disposals and kicking three goals. The 25-year-old continued to push her All Australian case, adding six tackles and five inside 50s to her disposal tally.

Second-year Giant Parker’s best-on-ground performance was a standout in GWS’ history-making win against Adelaide. In a game that all but secured a maiden finals berth for the Giants, the gutsy midfielder collected a game-high 30 disposals, eight inside 50s and took seven marks, proving too much for the Crows’ premiership winning midfield of Erin Phillips, Ebony Marinoff and Anne Hatchard.

The AFL Players’ Association AFLW MVP of the Week is in its third year and looks to recognise the AFLW’s best performers each round. Fans will get the choice to select the MVP of the Week, after three names have been put forward by the AFLPA.

All fans who vote will go into the running to win an Official AFLW gameball, valued at $189.99. To vote, simply select the player you deem to be the MVP of the Week. Voting closes on Wednesday, March 18 at 5pm AEDT.
