Moloney grew up in Warnnambool, Victoria supporting the Demons as a child. After playing for local side South Warrnambool and Under 18s in the TAC Cup for Geelong Falcons, he was drafted by Geelong in the 2003 Pre-Season Draft. He made his debut the same year where he received an AFL Rising Star nomination. Moloney was traded to the Melbourne Demons following the 2004 AFL season. In 2005 he was included in the Australian side in the International Rules Series against Ireland. 2011 saw Moloney win the Melbourne Best and Fairest as well as polling 19 votes in the Brownlow. Moloney became the AFL's first free agent, leaving the Melbourne Football Club in September 2012. The following month he accepted an offer from Brisbane.
