The Next Coach Program is a fantastic opportunity for players interested in pursuing a career in coaching to further develop and validate our future coaching philosophies. It is the next step in our career coaching pathway following on from the Level 2 Coaches Course held in January each year. The Program runs for 10-12 months and combines theory with practice.
David Wheadon mentors players individually and oversees the whole program. He brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the program. Players are challenged in the one-on-one meetings in regard to philosophies and what type of coach they want to be.
They catch up with David about 12-14 times throughout the program. David gives us a lot of reading material and video to improve our knowledge in this field as well as teaching the skills below:
- Developing A Coaching Philosophy
- Teaching Skill
- Coaching Skill
- Role Of The Assistant Coach
- Strategy & Tactics
- Opposition Analysis
- Player Development
- Industry Meetings
Participants then apply these skills as best they can at either Under 18 TAC Cup Level or with their own club’s development/reserves team.
Our Next Coach Program has been very successful in regard to fellow players who have completed the course transitioning into an AFL Coaching job. So far we have had a 100% strike rate.
