22Under22 side revealed for 2020

The 2020 22Under22 team, presented by Big Swing Golf, has been revealed, headlined by Essendon young gun Andrew McGrath, who has been voted for by the fans for a fourth season in his final year of eligibility.

McGrath, who turns 23 in June next year, was a shining light for the Bombers this season and was aptly named captain of the side.

The emerging Bomber said it was an honour to be named in the side for a fourth time alongside some of the game’s brightest young talent.

“To see the impact these players have on games throughout the season is inspiring for all and a real look into the future of our game,” McGrath told aflplayers.com.au.

“To be recognised as captain is also a proud moment as there are so many outstanding young leaders among this group.

“I can’t wait to see how they all develop both as people and players in the coming years.”

Weitering, who has also been nominated for the AFL MVP Award, was named vice-captain of the side after being selected in 92.14 per cent of teams.

22Under22 – by the numbers

Coinciding with improved seasons from Fremantle, the Gold Coast Suns and St Kilda, those teams were the most represented side with three players each.

After the release of the 40-man squad, more than 17,000 team entries were created by fans across the country.

This year’s 22Under22 side features 15 first-timers, one more than last year’s impressive effort, and three AFL MVP nominees.

This is the eighth year of the concept since its inception and is the only recognised AFL award voted by the fans.

The inaugural AFLW 22Under22 side was also announced earlier this year, in line with the AFLW MVP Awards, where Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy was named captain and Carlton’s Maddy Prespakis her deputy.
