AFLW MVP Round 1 winner revealed

Fremantle forward Sabreena Duffy has been voted by the fans as the Round 1 AFLW MVP of the Week.

Nominated for the first time in her short career, Duffy claimed the victory over Carlton’s Maddy Prespakis and Adelaide’s Anne Hatchard, becoming just the second Docker to win the nomination.

Duffy’s four-goal haul proved too much, claiming 44.5 per cent of votes, compared to Prespakis’ 34 per cent and Hatchard’s 21.5 per cent. The second-year Docker was instrumental in Fremantle’s win over last year’s preliminary finalists, adding 12 touches to her bag of goals.

Prespakis was arguably best-on-ground against competition newcomers, Richmond, on Friday night collecting 21 possessions, laying five tackles, three marks and kicking a goal.

Adelaide midfielder Hatchard rounded out the three nominees, following her record-breaking 35 disposal game against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon.

The AFL Players’ Association AFLW MVP of the Week is in its third year and looks to recognise the AFLW’s best performers each round. Fans will get the choice to select the MVP of the Week, after three names have been put forward by the AFLPA.

All fans who voted are now in the running to win an Official Sherrin AFLW gameball, valued at $189.99. A new winner will be selected each week, so don’t forget to keep voting.
