Statement to be attributed to GM of Player Relations Brett Murphy:
The AFLPA notes today’s media reports that former AFL player John Barnes intends to pursue legal action against the AFL.
The PA takes the issue of concussion very seriously and supports any player’s right to pursue any health or other related claim.
Medical screening relating to concussion has been made available to past players through the AFLPA since 2014. The participants and results of the medical screening remain confidential and, as such, the AFLPA is not aware whether John has taken part. If not, that option remains available to him, and any other player who wishes to participate in the program.
Reports stating that the PA have taken a position on John Barnes’ claim are inaccurate. The AFLPA was not aware of John’s claim until this morning.
In light of today’s media reports the AFLPA has reached out to John to invite him to meet with us.
