Debutant claims AFLW Players’ MVP of the Week

The fans have spoken! A whopping 53 per cent of fans have chosen Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy as the AFLW Players’ MVP of the Week for Round 1.

Molloy was the talking point of the week after managing to shut down dangerous Carlton forward Darcy Vescio, while collecting 20 disposals of her own in her debut AFLW match.

The 19-year-old, who was selected with pick three by the Magpies in last year’s draft, was the leading possession-getter on the ground on Friday night and held last year’s leading goal-kicker to seven touches with no impact on the scoreboard.

Her selection as the MVP of the Week was all the more remarkable considering the Magpies’ eight-point loss to the Blues in the AFLW season opener.

The Western Bulldogs’ skipper Katie Brennan received 25 per cent, while Brisbane’s Sabrina Frederick Traub rounded out the nominees, after their efforts in the first week of the AFLW season.

The AFL Players’ Association has partnered with Gloria Jean’s to stage the prestigious AFLW Players’ MVP Award at the end of the season, and the AFLW MVP of the Week, a new concept that provides the fans with the opportunity to vote for the best performer of the round.

Fans will get the choice to select the MVP of the Week, after the three names have been put forward by the AFLPA. Stay tuned, as the next batch of nominees are announced following Round 2 action.
