2018 22Under22 team unveiled

The 2018 22Under22 team has been revealed, headlined by Marcus Bontempelli, who has been selected for a record fifth time.

Bontempelli eclipsed his own record of four selections in the 22Under22 team last year by being voted in by the fans on a fifth occasion and capped off his last year of eligibility with captaining the side for third-straight year.

Melbourne, Collingwood and Brisbane are most represented in the 2018 22Under22 team, with each club having three players selected by the fans in the final side.

Essendon’s Zach Merrett and Sydney’s Isaac Heeney joined the likes of Jake Lever, Ollie Wines, Chad Wingard and Brandon Ellis as three-time 22Under22 representatives, while Andrew McGrath, Harris Andrews, Charlie Curnow, Eric Hipwood and Clayton Oliver were selected for the second time.

Oliver was also the fans’ choice as vice-captain and said he’s humbled to stand alongside the game’s most talented youngsters.

“To be named onto the 22Under22 team for the second year running is a huge honour,” Oliver said.

“Once again, the team is filled with high-quality young players.”

After the release of the 40-man squad, more than 5,000 team entries were created by fans across the country.

This year’s 22Under22 side features 12 first-timers and one All-Australian (Clayton Oliver).

2018 is 22Under22’s sixth year since its inception and is the only recognised AFL award voted by the fans.
