A best on ground effort from Sydney midfielder Dan Hannebery has seen him close within 15 votes of leader Nat Fyfe on the AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year leaderboard.
Fyfe, who didn’t play on the weekend due to injury, hasn’t polled a vote for the award since Round 14. At the time, he held a 31-vote lead from Hannebery – but the Sydney hard-nut continues to edge closer, receiving another 10 votes for his performance against Adelaide on Saturday.
Third-placed Matt Priddis received five votes to edge in front of teammate Andrew Gaff, who failed to poll – while his direct opponent for most of the game, Harley Bennell, polled five votes in the draw.
Hannebery was one of five players to receive a perfect 10 from the coaches in Round 18, along with Geelong’s Cam Guthrie, Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray, Western Bulldogs’ Stewart Crameri and Melbourne’s Bernie Vince.
