Coaches votes: Cream rises to the top

Geelong skipper Joel Selwood has capitalised on a lean month from Rory Sloane by hitting the lead in the 2017 Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award after Round 11.

Selwood polled a maximum 10 coaches’ votes in an inspired performance on Friday night, collecting 35 disposals, 21 contested possessions, nine clearances and a goal against the Crows despite leaving the field with a large gash in the side of his head following a heavy mid-air collision near the end of the first quarter.

The three-time premiership star now sits one vote ahead of West Coast’s Elliot Yeo, who polled eight votes in his side’s thrilling loss to the Suns, and three votes ahead of Richmond’s Dustin Martin and Sloane.

Martin polled 10 votes for his 38 touches, nine clearances and two goals as the Tigers comfortably accounted for North Melbourne on Saturday night.

Sloane failed to poll for the third time in the last five weeks after being held by Geelong’s Scott Selwood, who polled two votes of his own, in Friday night’s clash.

Other players to collect maximum votes in Round 11 include GWS’ Josh Kelly (38 disposals and 10 inside 50s) and Collingwood’s Adam Treloar (35 touches and seven inside 50s).
