Ahead of Sunday’s Women’s exhibition AFL game at the MCG, two Melbourne players appeared on Fox Footy’s AFL 360.
Melissa Hickey, 26, and Elise O’Dea, 23, will take part in the game between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.
Both clubs retained six players from the previous year’s squad with Melbourne choosing to keep Hickey while the rest were delisted and forced to retrial. A women’s draft was then held last month to determine the remaining 34 players participating in the match with O’Dea selected by Melbourne at pick eight.
Women from all over the country can be drafted with 268 players nominating for the 2015 version.
The players said the concept is the pinnacle of women’s footy with O’Dea believing the bonus of playing against people they know adds to the occasion.
“The thing is you play against some of your teammates and that’s what makes it even more fun,” O’Dea said.
“You train with these girls and then you go out and try and beat them.”
Sunday’s match is the first of two being played in 2015 with the second game to be held on August 16 at Etihad Stadium.
This year also marks 100 years since the first recorded women’s football match.
