The AFL Players’ Association (AFLPA) is proud and supportive of the recent appointment of Ian Prendergast to the role of CEO, Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA).
After six years at the AFL Players’ Association, in the position of General Manager of Player Relations, and six months in the role of Acting CEO in 2014, Prendergast’s appointment is well deserved, according to AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh.
“Having been headhunted for this role by the RLPA, we congratulate Ian on this thoroughly deserved position. I have no doubt the player association movement in Australia will be strengthened by getting Ian into such an important role.
“I’ve poured my heart and soul into the AFLPA over the time and I certainly owe a lot more to the Association than I’ve been able to contribute during that time” – Ian Prendergast
“Ian’s contribution to the PA has been immense over six years and he has been involved in some of the AFLPA’s biggest achievements, including the creation of the first annuity scheme in Australian sport, improved concussion management protocols and the establishment of the Players and the Game committee.”
Throughout his tenure, Prendergast has been highly engaged with more than 800 AFLPA members and has been instrumental in some of the organisation’s key milestones, which have included:
– step change in rookie payments
– increased injury compensation
– significant increases in player payments
– new leave arrangements and structured time off
– OH&S committee
“During the six years I’ve been at the PA, it’s changed significantly, particularly in terms of the organisational strength and relevance of the AFLPA in the industry. I’m extremely proud of the outcomes we’ve been able to secure for players during that period and the positive influence the Association has had on our members’ lives and the future of the game” Prendergast said.
“Pleasingly, I will still get to work as part of the players’ association movement. It’s a cause I’m extremely passionate about, albeit this will be in a different sport with unique challenges and political pressures. I’ve poured my heart and soul into the AFLPA, but I certainly owe a lot more to the Association than I’ve been able to contribute during that time. I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity it has given me and the relationships I’ve developed.”
Prendergast’s last day at the AFLPA will be this Friday 4th December, which coincides with the annual Directors and Delegates conference, providing players from across the country with a unique opportunity to meet and discuss issues facing the organisation and the wider AFL industry.
Prendergast will commence in his new CEO role on Monday 7th December.
