Indigenous AFL Players including Shaun Burgoyne, Cyril Rioli, Brad Hill, Neville Jetta and Jay Kennedy-Harris have shown support for an online campaign aimed at preventing remote Aboriginal communities from being closed.
The #SOSBlakAustralia campaign is a response to the Western Australian government’s plans to cut essential services funding to remote communities – a move that could result in up to 150 remote communities in Western Australia being shut down.
On Thursday night, Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne posted a photo on his Twitter account of Indigenous teammates Brad Hill, Cyril Rioli and Jed Anderson holding a sign saying, “Stop the forced closure of Aboriginal communities.”
Melbourne’s Heritier Lumumba, Essendon’s Courtenay Dempsey and his former teammate Nathan Lovett-Murray are others to have supported the campaign on social media, joining the likes of Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman and Australian rapper Illy.
