General Manager Player Development

Job Summary

Reporting to the CEO and as part of the AFLPA Management Team, the purpose of the General Manager of Player Development is to work across the AFL Players’ Association and through an Industry Governance Committee to deliver high quality programs and services to male, female and past AFL players.

About the role

The General Manager Player Development  forms part of an Industry Governance Committee whose purpose is to deliver an aligned strategy and approach to the way in which player development programs and services are delivered to male, female and past AFL players.

Through strong leadership of the Player Development team, the General Manager Player Development is accountable for the research, development, delivery, evaluation and continuous improvement of all programs as required by the aligned strategy in a way which effectively engages players and industry stakeholders.   This includes delivering initiatives with a particular focus on Mental Health, Wellbeing and Career Transition services.

The General Manager of Player Development role is also responsible for the management of a range of external program providers, the delivery of evidence-based research in the field of Player Development and the delivery of programs and services for other stakeholders, including AFLPA employees, Player Agents and the families of players.

Skills and Experience

You have extensive experience working in and are a strong advocate for player development.  You are passionate about maximising the sporting experience for professional athletes and can demonstrate the impact you have had in doing so.  You are known for the strong relationships you build and the way in which you collaborate and influence.  You are innovative and think big.

You have strong leadership skills and deliver exceptional results through your team.  You are a values based leader who thinks more broadly than your function to develop, deliver and evolve a wider organisational strategy.  You are trusted, respected and known for your good judgement in the decisions you make.

About the business

The AFL Players’ Association has a rich history and has entrenched itself as a key stakeholder in the AFL industry as the representative body for male, female and past player members.

Now in its 45th year, the PA has grown in influence and size to become a respected champion of players and the game.  It is the belief of the AFL Players that, as key stakeholders, players deserve to continue to have their voices heard on all issues pertaining to themselves and the game.
