Magpie takes flight in week one of AFLW finals

AFLW finals are well and truly underway, with a trio of impressive performances earning nominations for AFLW MVP of the Week, presented by Snaffle.

Magpies’ youngster Eliza James made finals history over the weekend, becoming the first AFLW player to boot four majors in a final. Prior to the elimination final, James had kicked just five goals in Season 7, essentially doubling her tally after the clash against the Bulldogs. The young forward also collected 13 disposals, two marks, and two tackles.

Dees gun Olivia Purcell shone in the clash against Adelaide, collecting a game-high 26 disposals, half of those contested.

Although the Crows started strong, a goal from Purcell in the second quarter opened the scoring for the Demons and ignited the comeback that saw them claim the win. The young midfielder also finished the match with 7 tackles, proving instrumental in keeping the Crows’ strong attack at bay.

The Brisbane Lions have secured their spot in the preliminary finals after taking on the Tigers over the weekend. It was neck and neck in the first quarter, but an inspiring Cathy Svarc lead the Lions through the second term, sparking a momentum that saw them take home the win.

Svarc finished the match with 19 disposals, nine tackles, seven clearances, and 422 metres gained.
