The AFL Players’ Association continues to support the development of a representative or All-Star match, to be held at the beginning of the season to showcase the game and allow the best players in the competition to compete against each other.
Acting CEO, Ian Prendergast said, “We understand that there are issues that need to be sorted out before this game can become a reality and that it will only be successful if we have ‘buy in’ from fans and general support from the AFL clubs.”
“While we are disappointed at not getting this concept up for the 2014 season, we believe that the discussions have been worthwhile.”
Based on feedback the Players’ Association has received, the representative game proposal is supported by players likely to be selected. The PA will continue to discuss with the AFL and clubs what format and timing is best to make it a reality for 2015.
The Players’ Association understands that clubs have valid concerns about how a representative game will affect them and will keep working to address those concerns.
“We believe that a representative game could develop into a respected celebration of the game, and we will continue working towards ensuring the football industry gets behind a game for 2015”, Prendergast said.
