STATEMENT: Koby Evans

The AFL Players’ Association has issued the following statement attributed to AFLPA CEO, James Gallagher:

“The use of homophobic language is harmful and negatively impacts the LGBTIQA+ community.

“Koby has taken responsibility for his actions by apologising during and after the match on Saturday. He is deeply remorseful and we will continue to support him.

“While the industry remains aligned in wanting to rid the game of homophobia, the current approach that focuses on punitive measures is not working.

“A more holistic solution requires meaningful engagement with LGBTIQA+ community leaders, education that reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of players, and a disciplinary process that minimises and remedies the harms caused.

“In recent weeks we have reinforced this in discussions with the AFL, and the AFLPA remains committed to work required to ensure a culture in our game where everyone is valued, respected and safe.”
