Troy a worthy star

A stunning eight-mark, two-goal effort against St Kilda has earned Carlton’s Troy Menzel the Round 16 NAB Rising Star nomination.

The 19-year-old has performed consistently throughout 2014, booting 22 goals in his 14 matches to lead the club’s goal-kicking tally.

The young forward has had an outstanding year, kicking the winning goal against West Coast in Round 6 as well as booting three goals in a quarter against St Kilda in Round 8.

Menzel, who was taken with Pick 11 in the 2012 National Draft, says he is honoured to receive the nomination.

“I’ve been working on my game defensively and offensively so it’s definitely good to get an individual reward,” he reflected.

“I guess I have exceeded my expectations so far this year.”

Following a strong pre-season, Menzel has shown glimpses of brilliance. For now though, his primary focus is simply finding consistency.

“I just really want to play some consistent footy throughout this year, and that’s what I’ve been able to do.”

Teammate Bryce Gibbs told aflplayers.com.au he has been impressed with Menzel’s goal sense and is hopeful he’ll continue to wreak havoc against opposition sides in the future.

“He just reads the play so well,” Gibbs said.

“He’s going to be a very special player. I’m looking forward to watching him develop over the next couple of years.”

Despite his exciting efforts in the forward line, a move to the midfield is looking likely for Menzel.

”I played there in a lot of my junior footy. I’m really striving to get my fitness to where it needs to be to play some midfield AFL footy.”

Menzel is Carlton’s second NAB Rising Star nominee, following Dylan Buckley who received the nomination for Round 2.

Menzel is eligible for this year’s 22under22 team. Will you select him in your side? Let us know in the comment box below.
