Young Cat Morrison is back in town

A best-on-ground performance from rising Geelong star Nina Morrison headlines the nominations for Round 5’s AFLW MVP of the Week.

Collingwood star recruit Brianna Davey was instrumental as the Magpies kept their finals hopes alive with a strong win over the Western Bulldogs, while Fremantle’s Kiara Bowers continued her stellar season with another eye-catching display with the pair joining Morrison as the nominees for the weekly award.

Leading the Cats’ midfield, Morrison was prolific against the Suns with her contested ball-winning and composed decision-making skills on full display. The former No. 1 pick showed why she was so highly rated in her draft year, collecting 23 disposals and eight tackles in hot and humid conditions in Geelong’s 20-point win.

New Collingwood recruit Davey was a standout against the Saints, helping to keep finals in touch for the Pies with a 32-point victory. The former Blue gathered 30 touches, laid 10 tackles and was crucial in her clearance work, giving the Pies their third win of the season.

Bowers has been one of the best performed players in the AFLW competition this season and she continued to lay her claims for All Australian honours with 21 disposals and a trademark 15 tackles as the Dockers remained unbeaten after five rounds.

The AFL Players’ Association AFLW MVP of the Week is in its third year and looks to recognise the AFLW’s best performers each round. Fans will get the choice to select the MVP of the Week, after three names have been put forward by the AFLPA.

All fans who vote will go into the running to win an Official AFLW gameball, valued at $189.99. To vote, simply select the player you deem to be the MVP of the Week. Voting closes on Wednesday, March 11 at 5pm AEDT.
