Queensland is the home of footy this year and it’s also home to a quarter of the 2020 22Under22 squad, presented by Big Swing Golf, with a record-breaking eight Suns and three Lions earning selection.
Charlie Ballard, Connor Budarick, Jack Lukosius, Jack Bowes, Noah Anderson, Ben Ainsworth, Ben King and Izak Rankine represent the Suns, while Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry and Zac Bailey are the three Lions.
They join the likes of James Worpel, Bailey Smith, Tim Taranto, Andrew McGrath, Aaron Naughton and Jacob Weitering in the 40-man squad, which is selected by the AFLPA Board with the support of Champion Data.
Ten players in this year’s squad have previously been selected in the final 22, while McGrath and Weitering will be looking for their third selection in the side. Marcus Bontempelli holds the record with five 22Under22 jumpers.
To be eligible for selection, players must be aged 22 years or under for the entirety of the season, including the finals series.
AFL Players’ Association president, Patrick Dangerfield, congratulated the players selected and praised their influence and consistency during the early stages of their career.
“The concept is great recognition for the up-and-coming talent across the competition and selection is something the players strive for.
“It’s not easy to walk into an AFL club and have an impact straight away, but many of these guys have quickly become key cogs within their teams.
“A scan of the squad is proof that the future of our game is in good hands”
Now in its eighth year, 22Under22 is the industry’s only recognised fan-voted award and provides the footy public with the power to select the final 22.
Fans can now visit 22under22.com.au to cast their vote, before the final team is revealed on September 22.
Fans who submit a team that matches the final 22Under22 team will automatically go into the draw to win a limited edition 22Under22 jumper signed by the captain and vice-captain and a Big Swing Golf experience for them and three friends.
Voting closes on Friday, September 18, 2020.
