Our Service

The AFLPA has a specialised in-house mental health and wellbeing team that is supported by a national network of leading mental health clinicians and wellbeing practitioners.

We help past and current players to connect to mental health and wellbeing support with independent practitioners away from the club environment. Our nation-wide network comprises over 700 AHPRA-registered practitioners, including psychologists and psychiatrists with expertise in a range of mental health concerns.

Players are provided with choice and agency to connect with the network practitioner who is best suited to their needs. This service is independent, confidential, and player-focused, provided at no direct cost to current and past players.

Our Approach

What is wellbeing?

Wellbeing is about feeling satisfied with your life, but that doesn’t just mean you feel happy all the time. You can think of it as the ability to feel a range of emotions as appropriate in different situations, but feeling generally content and under control most of the time. Your wellbeing is influenced by various factors, but fundamentally it is about feeling connected to the people around you, having access to resources to support you, and being engaged in activities that help to give you a sense of achievement.

What about mental ill-health?

Though we can generally handle stress, manage anxious feelings, and experience unpleasant moods in our day to day lives, it can become overwhelming if we’re facing a chronic and persistent challenge. When this happens, we can become vulnerable to mental ill-health. Mental ill-health typically affects the way you think, feel, and behave, and can make just getting through every day seem like a huge effort. About 1 in 5 people experience a mental health challenge in any given year, and it’s important to be connected to quality support to help recover faster and get back to feeling like your usual self. The AFLPA’s dedicated team of in-house psychologists, subject-matter specialists and administrators work closely with members, clubs, agents and industry stakeholders to advocate for and service optimal mental health and wellbeing outcomes for our members.
