Another Davey on the ‘G

Bronwyn Davey has watched her younger brothers do it countless times, but she will be full of nerves when she runs onto the MCG for the first time.

Bronwyn will wear the red and blue of the Melbourne Football Club against the Western Bulldogs in the first ever game of women’s football between two AFL clubs.

The eldest Davey brother, Aaron, says he is incredibly proud of his older sister but relieved she even nominated for the draft. Bronwyn, 32, put her hand up to appease Aaron’s constant nagging and was shocked when selected with Pick 49.

“…it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually play on the G, it’s going to be an awesome feeling and not many females at this point will get the opportunity,” Bronwyn said.

“I was hoping I could have a bit of pull and maybe get her under the brother-sister rule because unfortunately I’ve got to wait a few years until my sons start playing for Melbourne,” Aaron joked.

Competing for the football with three brothers meant for some “full-on” kick-to-kick sessions in the Davey household when they were growing up. Therefore it is not surprising Bronwyn loves to win the contested football.

“She’s probably more the harder inside worker. I think myself and Alwyn are a bit more polished and like to play with a bit more flair,” Aaron Laughed.

However, like her brothers she is a left footer, something built into the Davey blood according to Aaron.

Bronwyn, a mother of three girls, always loved the game but didn’t have the opportunity to play growing up in Darwin. Most of her weekends were spent alongside her mum and sister watching her brothers play.

It wasn’t until she moved to South Australia did Bronwyn join a women’s league. It was touch football first, but inspired by her brothers feats’ in the big league she decided to give the real thing a go, with the Greenacres and Port Adelaide Magpies in the SA Women’s Football League.

Aaron says it will be a special day for the Davey family. Bronwyn will have the responsibility of warming up the crowd before her little brother steps out in the main game. His advice is to have fun but watch out for the wind that sneaks through the southern side of the ground and “not to let Alwyn and myself down”.

Bronwyn is “extremely excited” to play, but even more excited by not having to carry Aaron’s number 36 on her back.

“I can’t compare myself to the number 36.”

The first ever game of women’s football between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will be played as a curtain raiser to the AFL game between the two clubs at the MCG during AFL Women’s Round.
