Madden Medal: Luke Hodge

Hodge is undoubtedly one of Hawthorn’s greatest ever players.

A four-time premiership player and three-time premiership captain, Hodge’s relentless attitude, his leadership and all-round ability made him a vital cog in one of the most successful eras in Hawthorn’s history.

While he was renowned as a brilliant leader, Hodge’s individual accolades also speak for themselves.

The general of Hawthorn’s backline, with the ability to go through the midfield and star there in his own right, Hodge finished his career as a dual Norm Smith medallist (just one of four players to do so), a three-time All Australian and a two-time best and fairest winner at the Hawks.

His ability to rise to the occasion in big games, particularly finals, was one of Hodge’s biggest legacies.

Hodge also captained Hawthorn between 2011 and 2016 and was named as the AFL Players’ Association’s best captain in 2014.

After retiring at the end of the 2017 season, Hodge came back out of retirement after being traded to Brisbane to reunite with long-time mentor and newly installed Lions coach Chris Fagan.

Hodge received widespread praise from those at the Lions about the role he played from a leadership point of view at the Lions, spending two seasons there and helping the young team on the path to a semi-final berth in 2019.

Hodge now splits his time as a part-time coach with his media commitments.
