Ireland too slick

Ireland has survived a late surge from Australia to run out 22-point winners in the first International Rules test, played Sunday morning Australia time.

Ireland’s comfort with the round ball and speed across the ground stood out in the first half, while the Australians struggled to retain possession in the slippery conditions.

Only Steven Motlop looked at ease playing the hybrid game and his initiative to run with the ball and carry it from the defensive end, along with some desperate saves from Ash McGrath in goals,  kept the Aussies in the game.

Ireland led by 15 points at half-time and as much as 25 points midway through the third term, before Jake Neade came off the bench and scored Australia’s first and only under (six points).

Overs to Lewis Jetta and Alwyn Davey pegged the margin back to 12 points at the final break. Motlop had the chance to apply even more scoreboard pressure in the final term, but his shot on goal from close range cannoned into the woodwork.

The Australian’s improved with their increasing comfort disposing of the ball and will take confidence from their second half showing, however they must win by 23 points or more in the second test to win the Cormac-McAnallen trophy.

To make the equation even tougher, Lance Franklin won’t play the second test as he flies home to attend the wedding of Brent Guerra.

The second test will be played on Sunday morning (6.30AM AESDT time) at Croke Park in Dublin.
