It’s Gary Ablett, but by how far?

Gary Ablett Jnr was the unanimous winner of the 2013 Leigh Matthews Trophy at the Be The Influence AFL Players’ MVP Awards.

The Leigh Matthews Trophy, proudly presented by Be the Influence, remains the only peer-voted award in the AFL industry and recognises qualities such as versatility, ability to perform under pressure, leadership and courage.

The MVP voting is a two-stage process and in the final round players cannot vote for their teammates.

Ablett was the most popular choice across the 17 voting clubs as the Most Valuable Player for the 2013 season.

He polled 1479 of a possible 2262 votes, from Joel Selwood (475 votes) in second place and Jarryd Roughead (378 votes), Scott Pendlebury (321 votes) and Sydney co-captain Keiren Jack (201 votes) completed the top five.

Selwood was the most popular second and third choice across the 17 voting clubs.

From the 54 players nominated, 49 received votes from their peers.

In the other awards presented on the night Jaeger O’Meara was the runaway winner of the Best First Year Player, presented by Be The Influence.

Like Ablett, O’Meara was the most popular choice at all 17 voting clubs and was awarded a total of 533 votes, dwarfing Ollie Wines (45 votes) in second place.

Brad Crouch (37 votes) and mature-aged recruits; Sam Dwyer (28 votes) and Dane Rampe (24 votes) completed the top five.

The voting for the Best Captain Award, presented by L’Oreal Man Expert, was a little tighter.

Joel Selwood was the most popular choice at 12 of the 17 voting clubs and with 172 votes he edged out Gary Ablett (115 votes), Jobe Watson (110 votes) and Luke Hodge (102 votes).

Travis Boak in his first year as captain was awarded 81 votes and was the fifth most popular choice for Best Captain.

Twelve clubs think Joel Selwood is the most courageous player in the AFL. He was awarded the Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award, presented by Fire Ready Victoria. Selwood finished with 234 votes, well clear of Daniel Hannebery (153 votes), Rory Sloane (74 votes), Callan Ward (55 votes) and Kade Simpson (54 votes).
