In the final round of the home and away season, a number of players set out to top the tallies and break records with three key game-makers earning AFLW MVP of the Week nominations, presented by Snaffle.
Brisbane Lions’ star Jesse Wardlaw has taken home the leading goal-kicker award for Season 7. After booting two majors on Friday night, Wardlaw’s goal tally wrapped up at 19 goals – equaling the league’s record. Wardlaw finished with an average of 2.1 goals per game, up from last season’s average of one goal per game. The key forward comes in three goals above Melbourne’s Kate Hore, who finished on 16 for the season.
The Lion’s goal-kicking prowess wasn’t her only contribution to Friday night’s clash against the Magpies. Wardlaw also collected 10 disposals, four marks, and a tackle.
It was do-or-die for the Western Bulldogs on Friday, with a win ensuring their spot in the finals for the second time ever. In a game where wet conditions made accuracy difficult, skipper Ellie Blackburn still kicked two goals across the match, including a goal-winning major in the last two minutes. The final goal put the Bulldogs ahead by just three points, enough to secure their spot in the finals.
In the all-important match, Blackburn also collected 23 disposals and seven tackles, proving her impact across the field.
Fremantle star and previous AFLW MVP of the Week winner Kiara Bowers had an unbelievable performance against the Hawks on Saturday. Throughout the tight contest, the dominant midfielder clocked 34 disposals, 22 tackles, and eight clearances. The impressive campaign sees Bowers now hold the league’s record for number of tackles in a game, surpassing Ebony Marinoff and Cathy Svarc for the top spot.
