Letter to my younger self is back this year, as we honour the 2018 draft class. Former Kangaroo and Crow Sam Gibson lets his younger self know that he must place a premium on relationships while in the game and to make others proud.
Hi mate,
First of all, congratulations! It has taken a hell of a lot to get to this point, so take some time to appreciate what’s already been achieved.
Before you embark on the amazing journey in front of you let me give you some advice. I have a feeling you’ll be far too stubborn to listen, but here goes anyway.
Continue to do things your way, they’ve got you this far and will continue to get you where you want to go.
LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF — LEE SPURR
AFL is a brutal game both on and off the field, so take your time to stop and smell the roses, focus on relationships and practice gratitude. It’s OK to stop every now and then to appreciate your achievements.
You’ll have to earn everything you get, so allow yourself and others to be proud.
LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF — ALEX SILVAGNI
You’ll experience some amazing highs as well as crippling lows. Always remember that things are never as bad (or as good) as they seem.
Place a premium on relationships. When all is said and done, it’s your connection to people that will survive.
Listen to your wife. Although her football nous leaves a lot to be desired, she’ll have a greater impact on your football than you could ever imagine.
LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF — SHAUN HAMPSON
You’ll doubt yourself every step of the way but always remember that you truly belong. You’ve earned the right to be in the position you are now.
Good luck mate.
