Adelaide co-captain Erin Phillips has been voted by the fans as the Round 5 AFLW Players’ MVP of the Week, presented by Gloria Jean’s.
This is her second MVP of the Week victory of the season, after claiming the award in Round 3, which makes her the first player to ever win two MVP of the Week honours in the same season. It also marks the third win for Adelaide after teammate Stevie-Lee Thompson was voted the Round 2 AFLW MVP of the Week.
It was a two-horse race between Phillips and Fremantle’s Kiara Bowers, but Phillips’ 23 disposals and two goals proved enough, earning 52 percent of the fan vote.
Despite gathering 23 touches, laying a game-high 16 tackles, collecting eight clearances and kicking a goal to keep the Dockers within reach of finals, Bowers fell short of becoming Fremantle’s first MVP of the Week for 2019, receiving 43 percent of the vote.
Geelong’s Kate Darby rounded out the three nominees with five percent of votes following her 15 disposals and three goals.
The AFL Players’ Association has partnered with Gloria Jean’s to stage the prestigious AFLW Players’ MVP Award at the end of the season, and the AFLW MVP of the Week again in 2019, a concept that provides the fans with the opportunity to vote for the best performer of the round.
