Each week, Aflplayers.com.au will highlight a Player of the Week during the AFLW season.

This week, after almost single-handedly winning the game off her own boot, Carlton’s Darcy Vescio receives the Round 1 honour.

Vescio booted four goals — three in the first half — from 13 disposals and had a hand in several others as the Blues overpowered Collingwood in Friday night’s AFLW opener.

The 23-year-old kicked the same amount of majors as the four losing AFLW sides combined and with that she is the first recipient of the Player of the Week.

Carlton teammate and vice-captain, Madeline Keryk, provided her thoughts on Vescio’s Round 1 performance.

“I thought Darcy played really well. Kicking four goals was great but it’s the way she goes about it, her work rate was excellent and she got up the ground and got back. She’s put in all the work during pre-season and is really fit and is benefiting from that now.

She’s hard to match up on because she’s good in the air, she can take those high-flying marks, but she’s also very agile when the ball hits the deck, which is obviously great for us because we can take confidence in kicking it in high to her or if the ball’s on the ground we know she can dart around her opponent.

I wasn’t surprised by her performance, she works hard on the track and in the gym and makes sure she does everything to the best of her ability, so it’s no surprise she got the result she did on the weekend.

She’s always looking to improve and there were a few things she wanted to work on after the practice matches and she got those right, which was perfect for our side.

The thing with Darcy is that it’s not just one thing that stands out, she has good goal sense, great kicking skills and good hands and they all come together to make her the special player she is.”

After the announcement of the AFLW Players’ MVP Award to be presented at season’s end, Vescio could potentially be in the running following a stellar first-up performance.
